More and more worry about what we put in our bodies and how our choices effect our environment. People are out full force buying eco-friendly products, demanding organic foods, and really looking to go green. But what about when it comes to lesbian sex toys?

I have one word for you: phthalates. These phthalates can be found in a ton of products, everything from your perfume to your hair spray, even the toys your kids play with. And yes, they are found in the toys adults play with too! Phthalates exist in a weird grey area, we know that it can be absorbed into our bodies when we come into contact with it, and we know that it can leach into the environment as well. What is unclear is what effect this has on people and places. Europe is worried enough about phthalates that they’ve been outlawed in kid’s toys. Should they be in lesbian sex toys? It’s hard to say. There are not very many scientific studies done on sex toys.

Adult toys are following suit. There is a small but growing trend towards phthalates free sex toys. Along with this there is a movement towards reducing the packaging sex toys come in and making the package more recyclable. But that doesn’t mean you have to toss the toys you already own. Slipping a condom over a sex toy is a barrier to phthalates. If you replace the batteries in your pre-existing sex toys with rechargeable ones you’re taking a step towards making old lesbian sex toys greener. If you decide to toss your old lesbian sex toys make sure you send them to be recycled, not to sit in a landfill.

The single easiest, sexiest green thing to do is to shower together. You’re saving water and having some good clean fun. Your girlfriend and you can also buy lingerie made from eco-friendly materials. Buying sex toys made from more natural materials can help, too. Glass dildos are better for you and the environment compared to those made from jelly or other synthetic materials- it’s more recyclable, too.
